Last weekend I went to the Storymakers Writing Conference, and let me just say, it was AWESOME. I love meeting new writers, I love meeting new mentors, and I love the classes. Really, I just love it all. Although, it’s quite the extroverted OVERLOAD for a very introverted person. It’s like socializing on steroids for me. Haha. But i survived and even had fun.
Me with my favorite writing friends
with Nikki Trionfo, author of Shatter. (Check out my review of her book HERE)
My number one favorite moment was the Saturday lunch speaker: Jennifer Nielsen. I haven’t read any of her books, but I will read them all now. She is the most amazing person. And she talked about writing like we are climbing and many-peaked mountain. We all left crying, inspired, and ready to move forward, even it it’s just an inch.
I also took her class on The Psychology of Characterization and WHOA. I want to go analyze all my characters now and make them ever stronger.
Another class I loved was How To Write Heartwarming Romance without Making it Cheese by Jenny Proctor. First, she’s an adorable person. Second she lives in the mountains of North Caroline and her picture made me insanely jealous. Third, I loved her seven steps to make sure we aren’t all gagging over the romance in the books we write.
And then my most favorite class is a tie between the 7 Plot Points of Romance by Sarah Eden and The Secrets of Retelling Classic Literature by Kate Watson (who has a book out today!!! Check it out HERE) and McKelle George. Both taught and inspired me. I am literally itching to get back in front of my WIP and keep writing.
OK, So it’s not all classes and lectures. There are nightly parties and I was co-in charge of the Minute To Win It Games. I tried to take classic games and make them writerly. My favorite was what I titled “Tack It On” as in, tack on another sentence. Using teams of 3+ each person had to write one line of a paper (not a sentence) and they had 3 minutes to make a coherent story. Below are the winners from the two rounds we did.
Which do you think is should be the Ultimate winner?
#1: Killer Squirrels came at midnight and stole the cheese from her. She was in the kitchen looking for her 1000 year old cheese wheel that held the ghost of Grandpa because he loved old cheese, when the squirrels devoured him and left the bones for chipmunks.
#2: The pirate washed up on shore pulling a crab off his peg leg. He fell and ate sand. “Well, that’s better than biscuits,” he growled, then saw his shipmate unconscious fifty feet down the beach. He got to his feet and hobbled down towards Susie, his first mate and love of his life until two days ago. He pulled a knife over her and asked, “Where’d the rum go?” “It’s in my gut, you sc–”
Ok, I am literally laughing as I type this. Remember, they had 3 minutes and had to rotate writers. So, which is the winner? Which 3 minute story do you like best? Let me know what you think in the comments.
