Today’s What I’m writing Wednesday comes from my WIP Senior Year Sonata
“Is she your girlfriend?” The interviewer asked as a techie set up Luke with a microphone.
“Yes,” Luke puffed with pride, “she’s the captain of the cheer squad.” He normally referred to Emily with her title attached, but for some reason it tasted odd in his mouth.
“I’m sure you two are quite the domineering couple around campus.”
Luke beamed. He relished the fact that the interviewer was absolutely correct. “We try to keep it low key.” Luke responded.
“Of course you do,” he smiled knowingly. “No point parading the fact that you are more blessed than the rest of the school. Excellent at football, with scouts from multiple schools wanting you. Add a gorgeous girlfriend to your side. You will have no problem adjusting to life out of high school.”
Luke smiled but his stomach clenched as he thought about his grades and the warning from Rock Canyon. He was glad no one knew. He could see the news, and his friends, eating up the fact that he needed a tutor to help him pass his classes.
The interviewer walked over to the cameramen to grab his notes leaving Luke unsettled. He would be ready to leave all of this behind. Would he and Emily still be together? Probably, but did he care if they were or not? Who wouldn’t want to date him? He was sure he could find another Emily when needed.
Another Emily? What did that mean? Was she a stereotypical cheerleader, and he, the stereotypical football playing boyfriend? No! He and Emily were more than that. Of course he cared if they were still together or not. They loved each other. And they would love each other even if they weren’t popular.
Sweat ran down his back. What took so long to get this interview started? He needed to stop thinking right now.
What are you writing today?
