Today is WIP Wednesday. What are you writing?
Here’s an excerpt from my current WIP: Senior Year Sonata
Football is my Life
Charlotte thought she was funny, did she? She thought she knew all about him and his life? Well, tell the world, Charlotte Pearlman knows everything. If she would only give him credit for football, then that’s all she would get.
“Nah, just hanging out I guess. Football is my life.”
As the words fell from his lips, he had a flashback to the ninth grade when she threw similar words at his face. Football is a game, Luke, not your life. The familiar guilt he felt each time he remembered that moment awoke in his gut.
“Life can be more than football.” Charlotte gave him a sarcastic smile. Apparently she remembered the comment as well.
He could easily push his guilt away when she looked at him like that.
“Yeah?” He drawled, “Marching band still on your college resume? Are you so excited to be back up in the stands next to everyone with no social life? You totally fit in.”
Her nostrils flared but her face remained stoic.
“I bet we have more fun in band than you do being smothered by other guys.”
“Oh really? Is it like, super fun to dance around with an instrument glued to your lips?” He laughed at his own comeback. “No wonder you’re in band. I would be too if I were incapable of emotional attachment to another person. Have you had a boyfriend before? Kissed anyone before? I’m surprised Sam hangs around.”
Man he was on fire. These comebacks were floating off his tongue. Retort that, Miss better-than-you.
But Charlotte didn’t say anything. Luke noticed her eyes well up with tears and her bully comment came to mind. Didn’t she know he was just having fun? He wanted to loosen her up a bit. Charlotte turned away from Luke. He leaned over his desk and started drawing on his notebook. The guilt inside him worked its way up his spine.
